One paragraph, before and after

Six small mistakes a teacher would circle. Tap any of them to see the rule Nib explains.

What Ana wrote 6 mistakes

Last summer I London with my friends. very excited because it was our first abroad. perfect and we fish and chips next to the river. I want to go back .

After Nib Level B1

Last summer I London with my friends. very excited because it was our first abroad. perfect and we fish and chips next to the river. I want to go back .

Mistake 1 of 6 · Tenses

Past simple, not present perfect

"Last summer" is a finished time, so use the past simple: I visited.

Nib's tip

Four of your six mistakes are verb forms. When a sentence has a finished time like “last summer”, keep every verb in the past simple, and check it agrees with its subject.

Suggested lesson: Past simple or present perfect?

Questions people ask

Is PenLingo free?

Yes. The free plan never expires: 2 reviews from Nib, our AI tutor, every week and the free grammar check after that, a free CEFR level check, all 39 A1 and A2 grammar lessons, a trial chat with Nib and one scored exam task. Paid plans start at €71.99 a year (about €6.00 a month) or €7.99 month to month, with a 7-day free trial first. Cancel any time.

Who is it for?

Anyone learning English who wants to write it better: students, people preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, PTE, TOEIC or the Duolingo English Test, and professionals who write emails and reports in English. It works best from about A2 (elementary) level upwards.

How is it different from a grammar checker?

A checker fixes your text. PenLingo teaches you: every correction comes with the rule behind it, your repeated mistakes are tracked and turned into short lessons, and missed answers come back for review until they stick. You also see your level and accuracy change over time.

Why not just ask ChatGPT?

A chatbot fixes the text in front of it and forgets you. Nib keeps notes on you: it knows the mistakes you keep making and tells you when one comes back, marks every mistake in your own text, lets you fix each one yourself first, and turns them into practice cards that return after 1, 3 and 7 days until they stick. You choose how it talks to you, from encouraging to a tough teacher, and how strict it is, and it checks at your CEFR level.

Can it help me prepare for an English exam?

Yes. You can practise the writing tasks from IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge (B2, C1, C2), PTE, TOEIC and the Duolingo English Test, with a free guide for each, timed mode, and a score for each official criterion. Scores are practice estimates to guide you, not official results.

How good is the feedback?

Nib, our AI tutor, reviews every text: it explains each mistake, suggests better phrasing, checks your CEFR level and points out the mistakes you keep making, in the tone and strictness you choose. A free grammar engine also marks spelling and grammar instantly. Like any teacher it can occasionally miss something, so we show the rule behind each correction and you can always ask Nib why.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. PenLingo runs in any modern browser on your phone, tablet or computer, and you can add it to your home screen. If you lose connection while writing, your text is kept on the device and sent when you are back online.

What happens to what I write?

Your texts stay private to your account. You can export your full writing history or delete your account and all your data at any time from your account page.

Can I cancel a paid plan?

Yes, in one click from your receipt email. You keep your paid features until the end of the period you paid for, then move back to the free plan with all your history.
