one & ones
Avoiding repetition of nouns.
The rules
- Replacing a plural noun ("shoes") → "ones".
- Replacing a singular noun ("phone") → "one".
- Adjective + "one" replaces the noun: "the chocolate one".
- Plural question: "Which ones…?"
- "That one" points to a specific single item.
- "One/ones" replaces countable nouns only; "water" is uncountable, say "some cold water".
Examples
- I don't like the red shoes, I prefer the blue ones.
- My phone is old, I need a new one.
- The chocolate one, please.
- Which ones are yours.
- This seat is taken, but that one over there is free.
- I need some water, a cold one please.
