The rules
- "Not bad" / "Pretty good" + returning the question keeps the chat alive.
- Enthusiastic reactions ("That's great/fantastic!") are expected for good news.
- "It could have been worse", standard silver-lining response.
- Open follow-up questions ("What was that like?") invite longer answers.
- "Anyway, I should let you go / I'd better get going" signals a friendly exit.
- Weather small talk + tag question: "…isn't it?"
