Superlatives

The best, the most, the least, comparing within a group.

The rules

  • Superlatives take "the": "the best restaurant".
  • Long adjectives: "the most" + adjective. Superlative + "ever" is a classic pattern.
  • Comparing exactly TWO things uses the comparative: "the older of the two".
  • Superlative + "in" for places: "the largest city in Japan" (not "of Japan").
  • -y adjectives: busy → busiest.
  • "One of the most…" + plural noun, a very common exam structure.
  • Far → farther/further → farthest/furthest.

Examples

  • This is the best restaurant in town.
  • It was the most difficult decision I've ever made.
  • She is the older of the two sisters.
  • Tokyo is the largest city in Japan.
  • Monday is the busiest day of my week.
  • That was one of the most successful films of the year.
  • It's the farthest I have ever run.
