am, is, are

I am, she is, they are, and the short forms.

The rules

  • "I" always goes with "am": I am, I’m.
  • "My brother" = he, so use "is".
  • "We" goes with "are".
  • "they’re" = they are. "their" and "there" sound the same but mean different things.
  • Negative: is + not. "The shop isn’t open."
  • For a question, put "are" before the subject: "Are you…?"

Examples

  • I am a teacher.
  • My brother is twenty years old.
  • We are happy to see you.
  • they’re
  • The shop is not open on Sunday.
  • Are you a student.
