this, that, these, those

Near and far, one and many.

The rules

  • One thing, near you: "this".
  • More than one thing, near you: "these".
  • One person, far away ("over there"): "that".
  • More than one, far away: "those".
  • "These" goes with a plural noun and "are".
  • On the phone, we say "This is…" to give our name.

  • This is my bag, here in my hand.
  • These apples on the table are for you.
  • Who is that man over there?
  • Can you see those mountains in the distance?
  • These books are interesting.
