my, your, his, her
my, your, his, her, its, our, their
The rules
- Before a noun, use the possessive adjective "my".
- The wife belongs to Tom (a man), so use "his".
- The keys belong to Anna (a woman). Before a noun, use "her", not "hers".
- "its" (no apostrophe) means "belonging to it". "it’s" means "it is".
- "their" shows possession. "there" is a place, and "they" is a subject pronoun.
- The possessive adjective comes first, before the noun: "Our flat".
Examples
- I love my new phone.
- Tom is at home with his wife.
- Anna can’t find her keys.
- The cat is sleeping in its bed.
- They are visiting their parents.
- Our flat is not very big.
