Nominalisation

decide → decision: the formal, academic style.

The rules

  • Turning verbs into nouns ("rise", "concern") makes writing more formal and compact.
  • implement → implementation.
  • reduce → reduction. After "a significant", use a noun.
  • It is common in academic and official writing.
  • After "The", you need a noun: "the opening".
  • Use it for formality, but keep some verbs so sentences still move.

Examples

  • The rapid rise in prices caused concern.
  • The implementation of the new system took six months.
  • There has been a significant reduction in crime.
  • Turning verbs or adjectives into nouns, like decide → decision
  • The opening of the bridge was delayed by a month.
  • Writing becomes heavy and hard to read.
