Question forms

Auxiliaries, question words and tag questions.

The rules

  • Question word + auxiliary + subject + verb: "Where do you live?"
  • "Mean" needs the auxiliary "does": "What does this word mean?"
  • Tag questions mirror the auxiliary: "you're coming" → "aren't you?"
  • "How long" already asks about duration, adding "time" or "much" is redundant.
  • Past questions use "did" + base verb: "Why did she leave?"
  • "Which" asks about a limited set of options; "what" is open-ended.

Examples

  • Where do you live.
  • What does this word mean?
  • You're coming to the party, aren't you?
  • How long have you lived here?
  • Why did she leave early.
  • Which of these two options do you prefer?
