The rules
- "Would rather" + base verb, no "to": "I'd rather stay".
- Preference about ANOTHER person: "would rather + person + past form": "I'd rather you didn't".
- "Had better" + base verb warns of a bad consequence.
- Comparing preferences: "rather X than Y".
- "Had better" + base verb: "had better take".
- Negative: "would rather not" + base verb.
