Write an essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem, on a more everyday topic.
40 minutes 250–400 words
What the examiner wants
Answer the question directly with a clear position, supported by developed arguments and examples.
Structure, paragraph by paragraph
1
Introduction (2-3 sentences)
Sentence 1: paraphrase the question in your own words. Sentence 2: state your position clearly (your thesis). Optionally preview your two main reasons.
2
Body paragraph 1
One main idea per paragraph. Topic sentence first, then explain the idea, then support it with a specific example. Aim for 90-100 words.
3
Body paragraph 2
Your second reason, same pattern. For "discuss both views" questions, use one paragraph per view and give your opinion in both.
4
Conclusion (1-2 sentences)
Restate your position in fresh words and summarise your reasons. Never introduce a new argument here.
Paraphrasing the question
Turn the statement into a report: "Some people think X" becomes "It is often argued that X".
Replace key nouns and verbs with synonyms, but keep technical terms like "university" if there is no natural synonym.
State your opinion with "I believe", "In my view" or "This essay argues that".
Swap words for synonyms: "people think" becomes "many argue", "children" becomes "young learners".
Change the word form: "the growth of online shopping" becomes "online shopping has grown".
Change the sentence structure: switch active to passive, or start from a different part of the idea.
Never copy the prompt word for word. Examiners ignore copied language when counting your words and it lowers your vocabulary score.
Keep the meaning identical. A paraphrase that changes the meaning answers the wrong question.
The question says
