can and can’t

Ability, permission and requests.

The rules

  • After "can", use the base verb: can speak.
  • Negative: can’t (cannot).
  • Ask for permission with "Can I…?"
  • "can" never changes and the verb after it stays in the base form.
  • Short answer: Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
  • A polite request: Can you + verb…, please?

  • My sister can speak three languages.
  • I’m sorry, I can’t come to your party.
  • Can I use your phone, please?
  • He can play the guitar.
  • Yes, I can.
  • Can you repeat that please.
