Inversion
Never have I…, Not only…, dramatic word order.
The rules
- Negative adverb first forces inversion: "Never have I seen…".
- "Not only" at the start inverts: "Not only was he late…".
- "Rarely/Seldom/Little" sentence-first require do-inversion: "Rarely do we see".
- "Hardly had I … when …", formal narrative inversion.
- "Under no circumstances" + inversion: "do I agree".
- Inversion is a stylistic, formal device, overusing it sounds unnatural.
